AED Program
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
NC State is committed to the safety and well-being of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus. The offices of Emergency Management and Mission Continuity, University Police and Fire and Life Safety are partners in the promotion of a robust Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program, which includes Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Medical direction for NC State’s AED program is provided by Wake County Emergency Services (EMS). This partnership ensures sound program practices and support to campus partners.
AEDs and Sudden Cardiac Arrest
The placement of AEDs on campus is important because of the timeframe to be successful in converting ventricular fibrillation. NC State University has a goal of having an AED on scene of a sudden cardiac arrest in the shortest reasonable response time.
- Fire & Life Safety (FLS) and University Police have AEDs in response vehicles and are dispatched to all medical incidents on campus.
- In buildings, AEDs should be mounted in an obvious and easily accessible location (not in locked or card access areas).
AED Purchasing
Units and colleges may purchase AEDs via Marketplace. The preferred brand is Lifepak CR2, as it is user friendly, reasonably priced, and easy to maintain and purchase replacement parts. All costs, from purchasing, to mounting and replacement components are the responsibility of the unit and/or college. FLS will assist with device maintenance and personnel training.
If you plan to purchase a device or repair an existing device, complete the AED Acquisition form. This form will prompt Fire and Life Safety personnel to contact you, discuss the location for mounting, arrange training and points of contact in the unit or college.
Program Support
Maintaining AEDs is a shared partnership between the unit/college and Fire and Life Safety.
- Fire and Life Safety inspects campus devices every 4 months. FLS will notify the unit/college (the program contact and facility liaisons) when consumable products are needed, including battery replacement and pad replacement.
- Unit/college program contacts should inspect each device monthly.
- If you notice an AED is damaged or the housing is not closing, please contact the unit/college directly or Fire and Life Safety for support.
When purchasing an AED, a college/unit program contact should be identified to support the AED and coordinate training.
- Ensure a minimum of 5 personnel are trained for the use of an AED.
- Training should be refreshed annually or when new personnel join your programs. Being trained is key to quick action!
First Aid/CPR/AED Courses
NC State offers an awareness level course, without certification for campus partners. This training is geared towards the lay rescuer and does not provide formal CPR certification.
- Visit REPORTER or click here to register for this course.
- To schedule a course for your department, office, or organization, please contact the Fire & Life Safety Training program coordinator.
- Please note: individual class requests need at least 10 people before scheduling.
AED Use or IssuesAfter each use, complete an AED Use Report. The AED Use Report helps Fire & Life Safety monitor, evaluate, and track use of AEDs on campus. The team can assist with purchasing replacement pads and batteries after use. Report any issues or ask for assistance by contacting our office.Need assistance?
