Active Shooter Preparedness

NC State takes a proactive approach to emergency preparedness, and encourages students, faculty and staff to be familiar with campus emergency procedures.
Reviewing resources available to assist you in preparing for unplanned events and taking appropriate actions to protect yourself and others in an emergency situation is worth a moment of time.

For better understanding of the various programs, resources and campus partners available, please review the following information.

WolfAlert allows university officials to notify students, staff and faculty during an emergency. Verify your emergency contact information via MyPack Portal (mypack.ncsu.edu).

For more information, please review WolfAlert Emergency Information (go.ncsu.edu/wolfalert).

Emergency Plans

Pack Ready Emergency Planning guides expanded emergency preparedness and planning efforts for NC State at the department and college level, to address pre-event planning, during event response and sustainability and continuity of services once the event ends.  Planning efforts address short-duration events that inhibit or impair continuity of services.  Department and College plans should be widely shared and discussed so others are informed and better prepared to respond in a variety of circumstances.

Emergency Preparedness

Make a Plan, Pack a Bag, Take Action.  We encourage you to consider including an emergency kit, kept in an accessible location. Recommended items for the emergency kit include required medications, spare batteries/chargers, water and non-perishable snacks, and any other items that are essential for you to be prepared for an emergency situation.

Training and Resources – Active Shooter

University Police provides active shooter training via an online video – Shots Fired.  To access the training, click here (https://police.ehps.ncsu.edu/support-services/training-2/active-shooter-survival-training/) login with your UNITY ID and select the appropriate student or employee version for your environment

If you are in a suspected active shooter situation, remember the following:

  • Get out of the building or leave the area immediately if possible
  • Secure immediate area by locking and barricading doors
  • Turn off lights, close blinds and block windows
  • Turn off radios and computer monitors
  • Silence cell phones
  • Avoid public restrooms if possible
  • Keep yourself out of sight, take adequate cover behind concrete walls, thick desks, filing cabinets and anything else that may help protect you from bullets

Remember the shooter will not likely stop shooting until engaged by an outside force.  Consider risks before un-securing rooms and rescuing others should only be attempted if it can be accomplished without further endangering the persons inside a secured area.

NC State campus partners provide an abundance of resources.  In person training and consultations are available upon request.
